様々な理由で抜歯をせざるを得ない症例があり、その場合治療オプションの１つとして、インプラントを説明することがあります。インプラント治療を患者さんにわかりやすい英語で説明をする場合、どのように表現するのでしょうか。抜歯が決まったことを前提に話をすすめます。

Doctor: “Do you know anything about dental implants?”

Patient: “I did my research on implants on the internet, but can you tell me more about it?”

ドクター：「インプラントについてご存知ですか。」

患者さん：「インターネットで調べましたが、もっと詳しく教えて下さい。」

Implant はもともと、何かを植え込むという意味になるので、デンタルに関して話すときは, “dental implant” と具体的に言います。話が進むにつれ、implantでいいと思います。

ちなみに、豊胸手術のことを　”breast implant” と言います。

Doctor: “An artificial root made of titanium is placed in your jaw bone. Titanium is a metal that is very compatible to the human body. Doctors have been using it from awhile ago when people break their bones and for hip replacements. We have to wait several months for the bone to heal around the implant.”

ドクター：　「チタンという人体と相性が良い金属からできた人工歯根をあごの骨に埋めます。このチタンという金属は、お医者さんたちは長い間、骨を折ったり、人工関節に使ったりしています。このインプラントがあごの骨に入ってから数ヶ月骨がつくまで待ちます。」

Patient: “The tooth doesn’t come with the implant?”

Doctor: “We will make a mold for your crown when the bone around the implant is strong enough to used. This will take at least 3 months on the lower and 4 months on the upper. Sometimes it can take longer than that depending on the type of bone.”

患者さん: 「歯は一緒につかないのですか。」

ドクター：「歯の型はインプラント周囲の骨がしっかりとついて、使えるような強さになったらとります。下の歯の場合は最低でも３ヶ月かかり、上は４ヶ月はかかります。もちろん、骨の質によって個人差があるので、その場合は待ち時間を長くする場合があります。」

患者さんはオペの様子とか終わった後の痛みなどを聞いてくる事があると思います。

Patient: “Will this hurt? How much pain will I be in after the surgery?”

患者さん：「痛いですか。この手術が終わったあと、痛みはありますか。」

Doctor: “You will be numb during the surgery. I will make sure you don’t have pain during the procedure. After the surgery, it will be uncomfortable, so you should take pain medication like ibuprofen for a few days. But surprisingly, most people are fine after the implant surgery as long as they take pain medication and follow our post-surgery directions.”

ドクター：「オペ中は麻酔が効いているので、痛みはないはずです。あっても、きちんと麻酔が効くようにしますので、ご安心下さい。オペがおわったら、多少違和感がありますし、痛みが少しあったりしますので、イブプロフェンのような痛み止めを数日飲む事をお勧めします。でも、多くの患者さんはインプラントのオペ後の痛みはあるけど、たいしたことなかったと言います。術後の注意をきちんと守って頂き、必要に応じて痛み止めを飲めば大丈夫です。」
